Updating the Raspberry Pi Firmware

The Raspberry Pi 4/400 may require a firmware update before USB booting can be enabled.

Follow the steps below to ensure your Pi is running the latest firmware.

Firmware Update Instructions

This process will require a microSD card running the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS.

  1. Insert the MicroSD Card and power on the Rasperry Pi.
  2. Login and perform the following sytem update/upgrade commands,
  • sudo apt update
  • sudo apt full-upgrade
  1. Run the firmware update,
  • sudo rpi-update
  1. Reboot.
  2. Install latest bootloader,
  • sudo rpi-eeprom-update -d -a
  1. Reboot
  2. Open the Raspberry Pi Software Configuration Tool (raspi-config),
  • sudo raspi-config
  1. Select Advanced Options, image
  2. Then select Bootloader Version and choose, Latest image
  3. When asked to Reset boot ROM to defaults, Select No. image
  4. Go back to the Advaced Options screen and select Boot Order.
  5. Select USB Boot and select Ok. Then select Finish (requires reboot). image
  6. Attempt to boot from USB:
  • Power off the raspberry pi
  • Remove the MicroSD Card
  • Connect the USB boot device (with OS installed on it)
  • Power on the Raspberry Pi
  • It should boot without error.
